Credited as one of the founding figures of American abstract expressionism in the mid twentieth century, Arshille Gorky's paintings are unique in that they contain a deeply personal, underlying narrative - Gorky was an Armenian emmigrant who witnessed the Turkish genocide firsthand before relocating to New York.  His timely paintings provide an important key to the current return to abstact and/or expressionist painting in contempory art.
