New York’s last taste of Paul McCarthy was sick and sweet—this past winter, McCarthy’s “Chocolate Factory” at Maccarone Gallery produced tiny chocolate Santas carrying tree-shaped butt plugs. His exhibition at the Whitney is filled with provocations of a more existential nature, and within this exhibition of frightening rooms and spinning films, one sees an artist’s mind after the laughter dies.
